About the United States Forest Service

The United States Forest Service is an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture, established in 1905. Its mission is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the forests, meadows and grasslands in the U.S. in order to meet the needs of present and future generations. In total, we manage 193 millions of acres of Forests and Grasslands (the equivalent to the size of the state of Texas, 268,580 square miles!). The National Forests and Grasslands are for everyone – we invite you to visit us!
